How to Track Stats for Flag Football: A Coach's Starter Guide

Flag football moves fast. By the time you've scribbled a reception on a clipboard, the next play is already snapped. If you want stats that actually help your athletes grow, and that families can follow, you need a system, not a notepad.

Here's how coaches make the jump from guesswork to real, game-ready stats.

Decide what to track first

You don't have to track everything on day one. Start with the stats that tell the story of your team:

  • Offense: completions, passing yards, receptions, rushing yards, touchdowns
  • Defense: flag pulls, deflections, interceptions, sacks
  • Quarterback: attempts, completion %, passing yards, longest pass, sacks taken

Once those feel natural, layer in the detail: targets, longest plays, QB pressures, 1, 2, and 3-point tries.

Assign a statistician

The best setups have one person whose only job is stats. It doesn't have to be a coach. A parent, a team manager, or an older sibling can do it from the sideline on a phone. What matters is consistency: the same person, the same method, every game. Hand them the statistician quick-start guide before their first game.

Go live, not post-game

Entering stats after the game from memory is where accuracy goes to die. Logging as the play happens keeps the numbers honest and gives everyone something to follow in real time. With Blitz Board Stats, every play you log rolls straight into live leaderboards that parents and players can watch from the stands or the couch.

Choose your level of detail

Not every program needs full yardage on every play. BBS lets you run full yardage tracking when you want the complete picture, or a faster stats-only workflow when you just need the counting stats. Same platform, same leaderboards. You pick the depth that fits your staff.

Make the stats mean something

Numbers only matter if athletes see them. Share player stat cards after a big game, review season trends together, and let kids watch their own progress on a player profile. That's how stats turn into motivation.
