More Than a Game: Creating Opportunities Through Girls Flag Football

For Terrell Huff, girls flag football has always been about more than wins and losses. It's an opportunity to help student athletes build confidence, develop as leaders, and recognize what they can accomplish when given the right support and exposure.
As head coach of Windsor High School Girls Flag Football, Huff has helped lead the program to back-to-back Central Connecticut Conference (CCC) championships in 2025 and 2026.
While those accomplishments are meaningful, Huff believes the opportunities created along the way tell an even greater story.

From Connecticut to the national stage
Windsor's success has helped open doors well beyond Connecticut.
The program earned an invitation to compete at the 2026 Unrivaled High School Girls Flag Football National Championship in Canton, Ohio, an event bringing together some of the country's top high school programs.
Student athletes have also gained college recruiting opportunities, scholarship offers, and national recognition.
Through the All-American Flag Bowl, student athletes have earned All-American honors and selections to compete in Frisco, Texas, this December as part of Military Appreciation Bowl Week at The Star, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
For Huff, these experiences reinforce something he wants every student athlete to understand.
Championships, accolades, and recognition are special. But what matters most is showing these student athletes that if they can create opportunities for themselves through flag football, they can take that same confidence, discipline, and commitment and create opportunities in life long after the game is over.

Growing the game through collaboration
Huff's involvement extends beyond Windsor.
He's been working alongside coaches, athletic directors, and stakeholders throughout Connecticut to support the continued growth of girls flag football and conversations surrounding potential CIAC sanctioning.
The work includes connecting programs, gathering feedback, engaging schools interested in participating, and helping identify what is needed to support the sport's long-term growth.
Huff recognizes that progress depends on the collective efforts of people across the state who believe in what the sport can offer.
We have a lot of great people doing meaningful work across Connecticut. The more we communicate, collaborate, and share what we're learning, the more opportunities we can create for student athletes. That's what I'm excited about.

Giving student athletes the recognition they've earned
As the game continues to grow, Huff believes athlete visibility needs to grow with it.
Through his involvement with Blitz Board Stats, he's seen how live statistics can help document performances, recognize individual achievements, and give coaches, athletes, and event organizers meaningful information.
Blitz Board Stats' work with collegiate flag football, including its partnership with the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), demonstrates how consistent statistics can complement existing competitions while giving student athletes another way to showcase their abilities.
These student athletes deserve to have their performances documented and recognized. We talk about creating opportunities, and part of that is making sure their work is visible. Whether it's recruiting, national recognition, or simply being able to look back at what they've accomplished, those things matter.
Coach Terrell Huff
For Huff, Blitz Board Stats represents another way to support the people and organizations already helping move flag football forward.

Building something bigger than football
A doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership and Social Justice, Huff also serves as Executive Director of DT Cares and Co-Founder of Dilligence Training, where his work focuses on mentorship, wellness, leadership development, and preparing young people for life beyond sports.
His approach to coaching reflects that same commitment.
The relationships developed through football, the challenges student athletes overcome, and the confidence they gain are all part of their growth.
Huff wants student athletes to recognize that the lessons they learn through competition have value in classrooms, careers, relationships, and the communities they will eventually lead.
At some point, the games end and the jerseys come off. What I want these student athletes to understand is that the same work ethic, confidence, and ability to overcome adversity that helped them succeed in football can help them succeed anywhere. The game gives us a chance to teach that, but it's on us to make sure those lessons last.
Coach Terrell Huff
As girls flag football continues expanding across Connecticut and nationally, Huff remains committed to working with the coaches, schools, organizations, and community partners helping create those opportunities.
The goal isn't simply to prepare student athletes for their next game. It's to help them recognize that they have what it takes to create their own opportunities, wherever life takes them.
